Wanna have a “Cool” Drink? Pay an extra rupee

Posted by: rksadhu on: 2 May 2008

Sprite Bottle

You might feel it is funny / stupid, but it is fact. I was enlightened about this only yesterday. Some stores (kiranas) charge an extra rupee for cooling as if that is an additional service they offer to the customer. Read further and you will know how it all happened.

The other day when I was on my way to home, I was feeling very thirsty. I wanted to have a cool drink to quench my thirst. I then stopped by a shop and asked for a Sprite. Having taken the chilled bottle I started gulping the cool sprite. I gave the shopkeeper (SK) a Rs. 10 note and in return he gave me a one rupee coin. Then the conversation went this way:

Myself – “What is the price?”

SK – “Rs. 9″

Myself – “But the price on the bottle is only Rs. 8″

SK – “Yes. But we take Rs. 9″

Myself – “Why is it so? What is the logic behind taking an extra rupee?”

SK – “For cooling”

Myself – “What!!!! Cooling? What are you talking?”

SK – “Yes. We charge”

Myself – “Isn’t it funny? So, you say people also drink cool drinks which are not cooled.”

SK – “People who want it that way do drink”

Myself – “Now please stop your illogical statements. You want an additional rupee and you use silly reasons for that”

SK – “How you take it is up to you. But you have to pay extra if you want the drink to be cool.”

I was too tired to raise another question. Finally said to him “Thanks for enlightening me”, I had the drink and left to my home. But the logic behind cooling is still haunting me…

njoy. I had similar arguments with a few buggers. I never paid them the extra rupee. Of course, I pay about 5 rupees more in the cinema theaters.

Ya. We are forced to pay and can hardly argue with those guys in cinema theaters. We have to live with it.

Hey Ram! This happens only in summer yar. This is because there will be more power cuts in summer and there will be more power consumption to cool the bottle. I think, we can excuse those guys only if it is just Rs.1.

Can’t agree with you on this. I don’t think cooling the bottles needs more power consumption in summer.

hey u r a lucky guy man. that shop keeper responded in a polite way.
last week i also got the same experience. but wat happend is after 2 mins i started argument with thst idiot, he began to use some bad words and the nearby crowd (probabally his frens) were about to attack me. we are the fools for expecting justice in this selfish world.

jai hind!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello RGR.
I understand that you did have a bad experience. In my case, I spoke in a casual way and I ended the argument as it was too late for me to get back to home and I was very tired.

You should be drinking cool drinks more often. This phenomenon of one rupee extra is a rather old one. The shop keepers offer all sorts of reasons, needless to say they are a sad excuse at the best.

Maybe the phenomenon is old, but this was my first experience of that kind. Anyway, I was enlightened by that bugger about the cheap business tactic.

Thanx to your blog i am enlightened too.

I had a similar experience a couple of days ago. I bought a Kinley water bottle (Rs. 14). I opted for a normal (no cooling) bottle. I was taken by surprise when he charged Rs. 15 and told me the extra rupee was for cooling. I told him not to be stupid and use some sense. “I took a bottle which is not cool at all” said I.

I nvr pay extra penny, if any shopkeeper raise his voice in front of him plz contact 1800-11-4000 and ask them how much to pay an tell them bout the shopkeeper..his license may get cancelld or he may get a warning.. we can make india a better place to live in..

please do not pay if it not the MRP.

Thanks
